Bioprocess filtration comprises the use of filtration techniques to purify and separate biological substances during the production of all biologics, proteins, nucleic acids, and viruses.

Filtration plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of these products. Filtration is applied post-harvest for clarification and reduction of removal of cells, cell debris, and other insoluble impurities that are detrimental to subsequent chromatographic separation processes. Methods include dead-end depth filtration and tangential flow microfiltration. Post chromatographic separation, ultrafiltration-diafiltration (UFDF) is used for concentration and formulation. Nanofiltration is used for virus clearance. The exact filtration method including filter type, size, pore size and flow rate depends on the characteristics of feed stream and the nature the biologic.
